VKM Photo - March '26 Exmoor

I'm happy to admit to my obsession with Exmoor and the North Devon coastline. I struggle to think of a place in the UK with the same variety of interests available within such a small area. Dramatic cliff coastlines, perfect for kayak adventures are neighboured by ancient oak woodland, with abundant wildlife. Steep terrain leads up to enchanting moorland, with expansive views across the Severn Estuary.

Having 3 small children, our family holidays are full of activities and Exmoor is the perfect location for us to go. My sons love getting out before dawn to look for deer with me, while the vast choice of wild swimming locations mean the swimming trunks are always in the car. And invariably - you're never far from a cream tea to cheer up those who woke up on the wrong side of the bed.

The range of wildlife available on Exmoor is incredible. We usually stay along the coast between Lynmouth and Porlock - all the photos shown in this article are taken in that area, no need to go in the car. While clearly not all the birds are wild, the red deer are glorious, and if you get out early and move quietly - common enough that you'll see them.

A spring weekend down to Lynmouth with some friends who'd never been before, introduced me to a new side of Exmoor. Restaurant Kensington in Lynton is fantastic food, and there is a brilliant range of bars and pubs to visit too. I would also recommend the new breakfast van in Lynmouth - for when you don't fancy cooking it in your AirBnB, they serve up delicious breakfast right on the quayside.
